IEA and EPE publish an analysis of the Brazilian Road Freight Transport, along with energy indicators and international benchmarks

Energy efficiency is a critical tool to cut carbon emissions and air pollution in the transport sector. And also fundamental for energy security. The objective of this publication is to present an analysis of the road freight sector in Brazil and internationally, with a particular focus on advancements in energy efficiency and alternative fuel use.

The report first provides an analysis of the evolution of the sector in Brazil, including the rationale for increases in demand. This is followed by a global section that benchmarks Brazil with other countries along key indicators, and offers examples of leading technology and policies to advance energy efficiency, carbon mitigation and air quality improvements of the sector.

Based on the international experience, this study recommends a few initiatives that Brazil could adopt to increase fleet energy efficiency. New scrappage programs, fuel economy targets, requiring light weighting and aerodynamic vehicle developments could improve fleet energy efficiency. Infrastructure improvements are also fundamental, as is the digitalization and the facilitation of intermodal operations, among other.
