Our Work

EPE provides a wide range of information, analyses and reports on topics such as: Electricity; Statistics; Energy Efficiency; Oil, Gas and Biofuels; Socio-environmental Studies and Energy Planning.

Our structure comprises 4 divisions and ten departments, described below.

Division of Energy Economics and Environment Studies

The Division of Energy Economics and Environment Studies is responsible for conducting the studies required to formulate economic scenarios for the expansion of supply and energy infrastructure; studies of long-term planning, including industrial studies on the energy use, technological development, energy efficiency, distributed energy resources, technology roadmaps, competitiveness among energy resources, environmental sustainability and the environmental impact studies of energy projects.

This Division comprises the Department of Energy Economics Studies and the Department of Environment Studies.

Department of Energy Economic Studies

The Department of Energy Economic Studies conducts studies where energy, economics, engineering and policy overlap. They include macroeconomic scenarios required for studies of expansion of supply and energy infrastructure; market studies aimed at defining energy consumption forecasts, including electricity, fossil fuels and biofuels; integrated resources long-term energy planning,  studies on energy use, energy competitiveness, energy efficiency, distributed energy resources, finance and the investment needs of the energy industry.

It is also its responsibility to monitor and produce regular analysis of the market of different energy sources; to conduct studies and collect data to support plans and programs for sustainable energy development, including energy efficiency and the rational use and conservation of energy, and to identify and quantify the potential of energy resources.

This department also manages the EPE data collection on energy information and the statistical reports on energy production and use (National Energy Balance – BEN) and on electricity (Yearly Electricity Statistics - Anuário).

Department of Environment Studies

The Department of Environment Studies is responsible for developing, monitoring, supporting and conducting environment studies related to the construction of the energy planning studies all over the company. This includes studies on the environmental feasibility and sustainability of electricity and gas production and transmission sources, energy resource inventory and prospection.

This Department manages the preliminary environment licensing process of new hydropower projects and collects information on environment impacts and social aspects needed to support sustainable energy development plans and programs.

Division of Electricity Studies

The Division of Electricity Studies is responsible for conducting studies on the planning of the expansion of power generation and transmission, the technical and economic feasibility of new power projects, the optimal use of hydro resources, the main economic and technical inputs for the electricity auctions design, sectorial regulation, market studies, among others.

This Division comprises the Department of Generation Expansion Studies, the Department of Project Studies and Development, and the Department of Transmission Expansion Studies.

Department of Generation Expansion Studies

The Department of Generation Expansion Studies conducts the studies on the generation capacity expansion of the system, on the main technical and economic inputs to the electricity auctions, which includes and the assessment of firm energy certificates (garantia física) of power plants and a number of studies related to generation planning (methodologies, modeling, etc) .

Department of Power Plant Project Studies

The Department of Project Studies and Development is the responsible for the technical qualification of power plant projects that are willing to bid in power auctions (including auctions for off-grid systems).

It is also conducts or monitors engineering project studies of hydropower plants during either inventory phase and/or technical and economic feasibility analysis, as well as interfaces between electricity and gas projects and the computation of price caps in the generation auctions.

  Department of Transmission Expansion Studies

The Department of Transmission Expansion Studies conducts studies on transmission capacity expansion, the main technical and economic inputs to transmission auction (including design elements), and is also responsible for studies that support the definition of engineering projects of the transmission facilities and the connection of loads and power plants to the country’s transmission grid.

Division of Oil, Gas & Biofuel Studies

The Division of Oil, Gas & Biofuels Studies is responsible for conducting studies on the management of oil and gas (O&G) resources and reserves, the supply, demand, trading, and infrastructure of oil and its byproducts, natural gas, and biofuels, among others.

This Division comprises the Department of Oil Studies and the Department of Natural Gas and Biofuels Studies

Department of Oil Studies

The Department of Oil Studies conducts studies on the management of oil and gas resources and reserves, and the production, trading, and infrastructure of oil and oil products and their regulations and market perspectives.

Department of Natural Gas & Biofuels Studies
