EPE publishes the technical study guide Assessment of undiscovered conventional oil and gas resources in the Pelotas Basin

Ppublished on October 5, 2026

During Rio Oil & Gas 2026, held in Rio de Janeiro from September 21 to 24, the Brazilian Energy Research Office (EPE) launched the Technical Study Guide: "Assessment of Undiscovered Conventional Oil and Gas Resources in the Pelotas Basin." This publication is the latest key deliverable of the strategic project "Improvement of Sedimentary Basin Analysis and Petroleum System Modeling," initiated by EPE in 2021 to contribute to the technical knowledge of the oil and gas sector in Brazil.

This study provides a preliminary assessment of undiscovered conventional oil and gas resources in the Pelotas Basin, based on currently available geological and geophysical knowledge and the assumptions adopted in this study. The results carry an appropriate degree of uncertainty and risk consistent with the basin's current stage of exploration and should be interpreted as an order-of-magnitude estimate of the exploration potential, subject to revision as new data and studies become available.

These results are part of EPE's ongoing effort to reduce information asymmetry in the energy sector and support evidence-based public policy formulation. This publication reaffirms EPE's commitment to transparency and the production of high-quality data, contributing to the debate on the future of oil and gas exploration in Brazil.
