The Energy Research Office (EPE), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Brazilian Center for International Relations (CEBRI) developed the Energy Transition Program. The objective of the project was to create a stakeholder forum to disseminate and discuss long-term energy transition scenarios in Brazil and to develop long-term energy scenarios based on an independent and neutral stakeholder forum.
The program was structured in three major phases. The first of these, called divergence, aimed to map the main trends and critical uncertainties through a series of virtual events, in debates with experts, the public and stakeholders. Then in the convergence phase, dialogues were held with companies in the energy sector to, based on inputs from the first phase, prioritize the critical uncertainties, define milestones and build narratives of three different net carbon neutrality scenarios in Brazil. The third and last phase was the development of the scenarios' quantification based on the methodology adopted by Cenergia/PPE/COPPE/UFRJ.
In February 2023, as a final result of the process developed, the Report "Carbon neutrality by 2050: scenarios for an efficient transition in Brazil" and the "Executive Notebook for the Energy Transition Program" were published. Both publications can be accessed below.
